Visiting the Dentist Should Not Be Such a Painposted on 18 May 2012 in Health and BeautyI have a terrible fear of going to the dentist ever since I was a young child. The only dentist I visited back then was a friend of my mother and the only thing I remember from those sessions were pain and sufferings. Nowadays I realise modern dentistry can do all kinds of things - from dermal fillers to botox! I recently had some root canal work done at a dentists in The City and I was amazed at the technology they were using. More importantly, modern day dentistry has a lot better pain management. So when I had a horrible sensation in my mouth last month, even though I knew I need to visit a dentist, I was extremely reluctant. Eventually my friend persuaded me to go since I was obviously miserable. Still, I managed to postpone the appointment twice, using any flimsy excuses I could think of. First it was because of a meeting running late, then it was because I had a slight cold. When I ran out of excuses and had to go, I was both depressed and nervous at the dentist's office. I visibly flinched when the dentist told me he needed to inject anesthetic because that was one of the nastiest childhood memories I had. I was surprised when the dentist said that he just finished with the injection because I barely felt a touch at my gum. The rest of the procedure went by with so little discomfort that I thought he was just checking out my mouth even though he did fill three cavities. I got off the chair with a relief and felt that I need to reassess a few other childhood fears. |

The Cost of Dressing Casuallyposted on 17 May 2012 in Business and FinanceAfter graduating from college in 2010, I accepted a temporary position as a staff accountant at an insurance agency. The hourly pay was unimpressive I was offered $12.00 an hour with a chance of being promoted after three months. I worked on the twelfth floor, which housed the company’s regional accounting department. I was told that the dress code was business casual, and I was encouraged to dress conservatively. However, the dress code was relaxed each Friday so that employees could wear jeans to work if they contributed one dollar to the company’s “Events Jar,” which was used to pay for birthday cakes for the staff. Of course, almost everyone at the office wore jeans each Friday. However, I found the idea of having to pay money to dress comfortably at a low paying job where employees never interacted with clients to be ridiculous. More importantly, I found the concept of having employees finance company events out of their own pocket to be abusive. Some of the bosses needed a reality check - something like a leadership development program to re-centre them and get them back on the right track. Life at the office could easily be improved by allowing employees to dress comfortably free of charge and by having the company foot the bill for office parties. |

Fliers, Radio, TV and Newspaper: Reach your Local Audienceposted on 16 May 2012 in Business and FinanceOne way to advertise a business is to send out fliers in the mail. Perhaps you could offer coupons to help bring in new business. That always gets my attention! I love saving money! If you want to save money on postage, you could copy the fliers and spend some time putting them on cars underneath the windshield wipers. This could be more effective if you target parking lots that are close to your business or that are close to the parking lots of your competitors. Also look at other forms of printed advertising - from jewellery packaging to carrier bags. Another way to market your business would be to use radio ads on the local radio stations. You could target radio stations with an audience similar to the one that you are trying to attract. For example, if you have a Christian bookstore that you are marketing, play commercials on the local Christian music stations. Newspaper and local TV ads are another way to go. |

Magnetabilities Jewelry in Time for the Holidays!posted on 12 May 2012 in Business and FinanceI like to buy friends and family unique gifts - from personalised usb sticks to tickets to the theatre. I don't always have unique ideas, but I do try to come up with them. One thing that I thought of this year is a magnetabilities necklace for my niece. It is a rope-type necklace that has a pendant hanging from it. On the pendant is a magnet that can be interchangeable. When you change your outfit you can also change out your magnet so that it looks like you're wearing a different necklace. There are many different magnet choices, and they are inexpensive. I feel that this is a unique gift that she will enjoy for many years to come. There are also bracelets to choose from, but I thought that the necklace would be favored by her more. She could always add to her collection, though, once she received the gift. It would be neat to see them together. |

My Car Hire Experience and Benefitsposted on 11 May 2012 in Cars and TransportI work for a car hire firm in Hinckley and I was recently asked to remember my own experiences of hiring a car. One of the reasons why I like car rental reminds of my experience as an exchange student in Helsinki, Finland. Two of my roommates and I decided to rent a car in order to go on a 14 hour trip to the North Cape, a beautiful cliff in the Northern Norway, where the northernmost point of Europe is. We got an Opel Astra, a mid-sized compact vehicle for a fairly decent price, along with insurance and a GPS unit. The car was barely driven and in an absolutely great condition. It was obvious that the rental agency took good care of their cars. Car rentals are great for people who are going on short trips, or simply want to avoid dealing with the stress and rush of public transportation in a place where their car is not available. It is something that gives you freedom, even when you are not in a familiar place. |

Eminem Recovery, Back to the Oldiesposted on 10 May 2012 in Arts and EntertainmentEminem released his latest album, “Recovery”, in 2010. It had been almost five years since, in my mind Eminem had published a successful album. In 2008 he released “Relapse” and “Refill and Repeat”, both of which were horrible additions to his portfolio. Recovery’s songs brought back the feel of Marshal Mather’s early works, the raw and “I don’t give a crap” mentality. I worked for a while for a recording studio builders and it gave me an insight into the recording side of things - and that in turn gave me a unique take on Eminem's production values, which are strong. These songs and the vibe they give are a fun and interesting to listen to. It was nice to see a favorite childhood musician get back into the game and compete with new artists successfully. My favorite song of the “Recovery” album is “Won’t Back Down” sung with the artist Pink. The song has rhymes and rhythms that are catchy and frankly genius. The line “I'm an uncooked slab of beef laying on your kitchen floor other words I'm off the meat rack” is that clever Eminem verse that brings us back to his early days but with today’s sound. This captures the heart of his old fans while bringing in newer generations. I hope to see Eminem produce more records like “Recovery” for many more years to come his use of beats, rhythms, catchy phrases, and witty punch lines show that he is more than just a musician but truly and artist. |

Murder Mystery Reception With Wedding At A Unique Bed And Breakfastposted on 8 May 2012 in UncategorisedWhen we got married, I knew I didn't want a traditional wedding with diamonds rings, white dresses, tiaras and all the paraphernalia that goes with weddings. We chose a pretty wedding reception venue in Nottinghamshire for the ceremony and reception. My fiance and I had previously stayed at a very unique haunted Bed and Breakfast, and when we found out that the owner was also able to officiate weddings, we knew we had found the perfect location for our wedding! The Bed and Breakfast has 11 guest rooms, so we were able to invite 20 of our closest family and friends to the ceremony itself. We also decided to have our reception be a Murder Mystery, where each attendee would get a part to play. We got married outside in the garden, and then came back into the dining hall for the reception. The Murder Mystery was a BLAST! Everyone had so much fun, even the guests who were on the shy side. My mom was the life of the party she did such a wonderful job with her part. Turns out that my brother was the "killer". All the guests stayed overnight in their Victorian-themed rooms, all of which were luxurious and beautiful. The next morning we all enjoyed an unforgettable 3-course gourmet breakfast. About a week later, we had a reception back home for everyone else that we weren't able to invite to the wedding. We had a lovely buffet and three different kinds of cake to choose from. All in all, I'd say we had the perfect wedding to fit our personalities, and it was a weekend that our guests aren't soon to forget. |

Some Tips on Keeping a Tight Control of Your Purse Stringsposted on 8 May 2012 in Business and FinanceMany of us struggle to control our finances and from time to time may wonder how we could improve our own situations, gaining a tighter grasp of the purse strings. Short of holding up a liquor store in a ski mask or living off the food in dumpsters, what is the best way to ensure that you always have enough money to go around? There are a few possible alternatives that can be very effective, and that I have found useful: • Drawing up clear and realistic budgets for each month – this is the best way to figure out how much of the money in your bank is ‘yours’, and what you can afford to spend. • Avoid excesses – many people live in their overdraft month to month, not through necessity or a lack of cash flow, but due to the excessive consumerist lifestyles they need. Ask yourself what you really need, is the purchase necessary? • Seek personal financial management advice from experts. • With respect to work, lunches can be a costly affair, by making pre prepared meals rather than buying one each day, huge savings can be made. |

A Site For Crafty People To Sell Their Products Onlineposted on 7 May 2012 in Internet RelatedThere is a site that I have watched become more and more popular for sellers. Etsy dot com is a great place to open up a shop to sell home-made goods. I found this site through one of my friends who sells jewelry. The site allowed her to affordably set up a site to start her business online. Although there are many web developers who can help you develop your own site, it's really hard to get traffic to your site. Working for a SEO company in Leicester, I know the problems people face getting traffic only too well. That's why Etsy's great because it already has traffic. She can use her own site address to advertise, but shoppers can also find her site through the search option. Although I went to this site originally for my friend's jewelry, I have found a lot of other talented artists and have purchased many things. There is a huge variety of products, including paintings, jewelry, stationary, pottery, and pretty much any other crafty items you can imagine. Checkout is easy through Paypal, and there is a function to communicate with the seller before buying. I trust this site and would not hesitate to recommend it to others to find original work. |

Every Eight Year Old Van Has Clothes Hangers in the Backposted on 6 May 2012 in Cars and TransportYears ago I went to a library book sale with a friend of a friend named Gary who I had never met before. But he had a van, which was important, as we both planned to stock up on lots of books to sell online. His van was kitted out with van racks so we could even pile the books in the back in some kind of orderly fashion. After I loaded up my handcart, I made a trip out to the parking lot to drop them off into Gary's van. I noticed the rent-a-cop and a woman next to our van trying to get into her car. I went over, noticed that they had managed to get the windows open about an inch with the rent-a-cop's slimjim, and saw her keys lying by the stickshift. I asked if those were her keys, she said, "Yes". I went to Gary's van, dug around in back, and found a old wire clothes hanger. I unwound it, went over to the woman's car, and fished out her keys. Of course, there were plenty of snide comments like "Bet this is the first time you did that with owner around" and "Pretty nervy doing that with the cops looking on". Gary had come back to unload during this time and saw what was happening. "So Mike, how did you know I had clothes hangers in the back of my van?". I replied, "State law, Gary. Every van over 5 years old has to have clothes hangers in back". And that's how I meet one of my best friends to this day. |

A Girl's Search for Her Dad Beginsposted on 6 May 2012 in TechnologyI was only thirteen when mom and dad divorced each other. I did not attempt to stop them from doing what they wanted because I assumed they knew better. This is not to say that I agreed with the decisions they made because personally, I think they should have thought about it more carefully. They should have considered me and my welfare before they decided to part ways. But then again, I was not in the position to tell them what to do. I was left with no choice but to deal with the reality of a broken home. For the longest time, I never heard from my father. I felt bad because I did not think it was necessary for him to abandon me if their marriage didn't work out. I felt he could have done a better job as a father. Nevertheless, when I was of age, I look up reverse phone numbers with the hope of finding him. It's hard to accept but the truth is, a part of me still needed a dad. |

How to Log in to Your Facebook Accountposted on 5 May 2012 in TechnologyPrior to the twenty-first century, the internet was used solely as a tool of making money and aiding in research. This has, however, changed as the internet is today used to perform an array of tasks. In recent times, social networks have completely taken over the online world. It is estimated that half of the worlds population is comprised of active chart room users. More alarming, though is the number of individuals who use social networks on a daily basis. At every given time, there are a considerably large number of people using chart rooms. The one chart room that has attracted individuals like bees to an orchard is face book. Introduced in 2004, the latter chart room has become an online force to reckon with. Hence, many online businesses, websites, and blogs seldom compete with face book for users rather they use the chart room to advertise their businesses. However, they do not do this free of charge, there is an amount of money you have to pay if you want your website to be advertised on face book. Thus, it is similar to advertising through the media in the offline world. Opening a face book account is the easiest task anyone can undertake, thus the facebook account login procedure is similar to drinking a glass of water. This simplicity has attracted persons of all ages, colors, races, and tribe to facebook. However, the one main reason as to why people join chart rooms will always be to interact, meet new people, and learn about different cultures from all over the world |

It's a Vacation Everyday When You Own a Spaposted on 5 May 2012 in Home and GardenBringing a spa into your world is a truly life-changing event. We bought our Hot Springs model - a second hand hot tub on sale - right after sitting in our friends’ spa for half of a New Year’s day to recuperate, and wonder how we ever lived without one. Lowering ourselves into the therapeutic sea of bubbles always elicits an “ahhh.” And, why pay a masseuse? After a long, hard day at the office (or at home), we head right for the spa to re-balance ourselves and let the jets soothe our muscles with their gentle massage. On a cold winter’s day, the warm water welcomes us and wraps us in a blanket of relaxation. In the summer, we turn the heater off and enjoy the cooling rush of water flowing around us. Besides all of the health benefits, the greatest thing our spa has given us is a sense of escape. We’ve stopped looking forward to staying at hotels that had spas since we’ve created our own vacation hotspot from which we don’t want to stray. |

Saving Money by Sharing Your Car With Neighboursposted on 4 May 2012 in Cars and TransportWhile I love my new vauxhall corsa, no car can escape the rising fuel costs. And talking to my neighbour, it was clear he was suffering from rising fuel costs. Then an idea was born: why not share car trips? We tried it for one week and we both were astonished by the results. Whenever one of us needed to go shopping, we agreed to drive with just one car. Not only did we save money by sharing our car, but we both found out how to help each other in other ways as well (e.g. I do hate mowing the lawn, but my neighbour had a vehicle to do this). I do consider this one of the best ways to save money. Just ask a friend or a colleague to drive with just one car and you will be astonished by all the savings that are possible this way. After I told everybody about this method of saving money, my whole family does this now, too! |

French Bottle Drying Racksposted on 1 May 2012 in Home and GardenFrench bottle drying racks are very interesting items. These come in various sizes and are essentially conical racks with an array of small hooks. Many people use French bottle drying racks for shop displays and for presenting collections of personal effects. These look delightful when used to hang collections of porcelain tea-cups, ribbons, jewellery and interesting small artefacts. I have even seen them used as very stylish and contemporary Christmas trees, with glass baubles and beads. These French bottle drying racks are usually made from galvanised metal. These come from the vinyards of France, and also in the cider producing areas of Normandy and Brittany. They are designed to dry the inside of all the wine bottles, ready for refilling with the new season's wine harvest - something we all look forward to. Today these are pretty difficult to find but still remain extremely popular with both craft makers and interior designers. |

No one can know everything about computers.posted on 1 May 2012 in TechnologyIt feels good to be a computer expert. This is what gives me the greatest pleasure because I am called many times to help my colleagues in the office whenever they have a problem working with computers. I managed to get good computer skills when in college. I took evening classes to study computer skills in my first two years in college and thereafter, I started learning other skills on my own from online tutorials. This is what has given me the expertise that I have to work with computers. Now I can handle many tasks that many people cannot be able to, that is why I am a very important person in my company. I help people with such tasks as how to convert word to PDF, a very important task that not so many people can handle in a company. Despite the many years you spend working with computers, there are things you may not know until they are shown to you. This is what makes me know that I am not an expert the way I see myself because there are things I still have to learn. |

My Unforgettable First Experience at the Dentistposted on 29 April 2012 in Health and BeautyWhen I was about the age of 6, my tooth began shaking and I was really frightened. I'd always feared the dentist in Essex nearby from the stories my friends told me. My father took my first tooth out and I cried a lot on seeing the blood. When my second tooth started shaking I was more frightened than before. So I did not tell anyone and kept silent. But my parents found out. But by that time a new tooth was coming from behind. My father took away the second tooth, but the new tooth was coming out in a twisted way. That was when my parents decided to take me to a dentist. I was very much scared when I entered the room. But the dentist was friendly. He understood my fear and started to talk about other things. He told my father that he will take to take a nearby tooth so that the new tooth will come out properly. The dentist told me that it would pain only a bit. Just like an ant bite. He gave me an injection on my gum and told me to wait outside. Afterwards he took my tooth out and I did not feel much pain. He smiled at me when I was leaving. From next time onwards I was happy to go to the dentist to take my tooth out. Other Sources: wikia.com | archive.org | www.blueskydental.co.uk |

The Good Old Days, When Toys Were Simple And Funposted on 27 April 2012 in Toys and GamesAs the times have changed, so have toys. Nowadays you have remote control trucks, computer games and the like. Things are not as simple as they once were, and our children are growing up with completely different ideas about life because of it. For example, many new Monopoly games come with a credit card rather than cash. Should we really be teaching our children that it is okay to use a credit card for every purchase? There is one difference in the credit cards in the game and the credit cards that we use as adults&mdashthe Monopoly credit cards do not let you spend more money than you have in your account. How will our children know that real credit cards do not cut you off when you run out of money? Our credit cards allow you to spend money that you do not have. We are setting our children up to be in debt. The best solution is to go back to simple games that do not give children unrealistic ideas about money. |

What It Takes to Truly Create an Effective Learning Environmentposted on 21 April 2012 in UncategorisedLearning isn't just about sitting down and listening to a teacher or reading a book. It's about ENGAGING. You can look at a class full of children and think they're learning something, but they're not truly engaged. They're bored, or tired, or distracted. These signs aren't obvious either. An educational psycholgist studies the behaviour of students to look for such signs and seeks to find the causes of these blocking behaviours. Sometimes the problems are environmental, sometimes emotional, sometimes both. A search for educational psychologist midlands revealed to me just how big this field is growing, and I think it's a good sign. It's not enough to just sit children down in a classroom - we need to create true learning environments, and find out what truly engages these students - this will in turn make them enjoy the act of learning, which will only be a good thing for later life. |

Adding Light and Access to an Existing Foyerposted on 16 April 2012 in Holiday and TravelHaving just completed the landscaping on our garden (replete with a fine gazebo there), I reluctantly turn to the big building next to it - our house. Yes, I'm talking about home improvements here. My friend owns a Dordogne farmhouse and that is the inspiration I am using to improve our own home. Our front hallway, or foyer, is functional, yet long, dark and basically a dead end to another long hallway. Our house is an L-shape ranch style, and I would like to open up the room adjacent to the front hallway, so that the "dining room" has access to the hall, and is more functional. We have an open kitchen/dining/living room area, and the "dining room" is quite forgotten. Because the west side of the house is made up of all windows, the light from the "dining room" would flow into the hallway once the passage is made, to light up the very dark space. The "dining room" does not get any use except as a computer/exercise room, and I believe that it would be more inviting if it had a different, more convenient access. My only concern is for the stability of the wall if a portion of the wall was knocked out to make an open door. I do not want to cause additional stress to the existing beams. |
